Preserving the Integrity of the Learning Environment: Cell Phones Banned in School
As students, staff, and parents likely already know, this summer Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bill 96 into law, requiring every school district in Ohio to restrict cell phone usage during school hours and aims to minimize student use of cell phones in K-12 schools. Last year, SWCS began substantial steps towards achieving this goal through our #BePresent campaign prohibiting the use of cell phones during instructional times in all schools.
Heading into the 2025-2026 school year, students will be expected to have devices on silent mode and out of sight to keep their attentiveness on learning. Families can help our schools in reinforcing these healthy boundaries, by discussing the new expectations with their student(s) at home. Working collaboratively with families to reinforce these expectations, we look forward to helping students understand the importance of a distraction-free classroom to start the year as a part of our #BePresent campaign to make oneself fully present in daily learning.

NMS Electronics Policy for 2025-2026
“Electronic devices” for this policy includes: cell phones, headphones, earbuds/airpods, hand-held games, and/or other devices which allow students to message others or access the internet for non-classroom purposes. School issued Chromebooks do NOT fall under “electronic devices” for the purpose of this policy.
Students are not permitted to use electronic devices from the time they enter the school until the time they exit at the end of the day.
Teachers are not required to remind or warn students about the electronic device policy before assigning discipline.
All staff will be assigning After-School Detentions (4:00-5:00pm) for any student who is seen with an electronic device.
Students who consistently misuse electronic devices or who refuse to put them away will have the device confiscated and kept in the office. Then the student or parent will be required to pick the device at the end of the school day.
Students who have multiple infractions of this policy may be required to turn in their electronic device at the start of each school day. Not complying with the electronics policy may result in more severe consequences for refusing to comply with the student code of conduct.
